Broad St. Run - Training Day 1
Tuesday, February 5th, 2008By: Joseph Norton
Just got back from my first training run, and good thing for that because I’ve got a lot of work to do.
According to the training guide I’m following from Runners World:
Tuesday: 3 mi @ 70% MHR
So I did all the usual stretches I’m familiar with, made sure to iron out the kinks
because I’d hate to start off with an injury.
Then I ran.
The first mile felt awesome, felt much smoother than my previous runs this year.
I use to run a mile before lifting,
or sometimes I’d run a mile just after lifting. Anyway, this first mile today felt better
than those. I was feeling real good the way it was going, until I got about 3/5 into the 2nd mile when I started noticing blister pain on the insides of my feet. I pressured on, no way was I going to quit before my 2nd mile of training day 1.
By the time I got near the end of the 2nd mile
the blisters were hurting pretty bad and I was getting those irritating side-stitch cramps in the abdomen. I decided to stop after the 2nd mile and to walk a bit after to cool down and stretched.
I’m unhappy that I didn’t get the 3 miles that I wanted
but I’d rather stop alittle early in the beginning of my training than push too hard
and end up with open wounds my feet.
I think I’ll go back to the gym tonight to put in another 1 or 2 miles, depends on how my feet are feeling throughout the day- I still have all my classes for the day.
In the meantime I’ll bandage up the blisters and chow down.
I also noticed that I weighed 172 this morning.
This was pretty startling since I pigged out at home this weekend during the superbowl and brought all kinds of goodies back to my dorm room with me. In any event I don’t really want to lose any more weight, but I guess thats inevitable if I plan on doing alot of running in the upcoming months…
I’ll just have to watch my weight and try to adjust my diet accordingly.
Despite not making my quota for day 1, I don’t think it’s a serious issue - I have plenty of time to get back into shape and as
long as I fix whatever is causing these blisters so early in my run- then I’ll be fine. Tomorrow is a “crosstrain” day which I think I will use to lift and give my feet a break.
